Opportunity Housing Proposal Debate
Speaking for the proposal: Mathew Reed,
Policy Manager at Silicon Valley@Home
Speaking against the proposal: Pierluigi Oliverio,
San Jose Planning Commissioner
About the debate:
There is a proposal going to San Jose City Council in May which will amend the zoning restrictions on single family housing. This proposal will allow a developer to remove a single family home and erect a duplex, quadplex or hexplex. What are the advantages and disadvantages of doing this?

From San Jose Inside:
Google and San Jose on Tuesday released a long-awaited proposed development agreement for a massive, mixed-use office campus that could rise around Diridon Station.
The agreement outlines the campus, called Downtown West, that Google wants to build in the 10th largest city in the country, but also the $200 million community benefits package and about $1 billion in other “features” it’s willing to offer up in exchange for the green light to construct the new campus.
The multinational tech giant aims to build about 6.5 million square feet of offices—though it is studying the impacts of building up to 7.3 million square feet of office space in its proposal.
From City of Santa Clara:
You may or may not know but it is a project where we are aiming to develop both bicycle and pedestrian improvements along Pruneridge Ave. from Pomeroy to Winchester. It is a planning level document and at this time we have no funding yet for design or construction of the improvements we will identify in the Plan. However, outreach is very important to the City, especially for this project.
Please know there are three ways to stay involved with this project:
