Background:The voices of all San José community members are critical to shaping the future of housing.

All California cities and towns are currently updating the Housing Element of their general plans, which are the blueprint for how cities develop and grow. In San José, residents are encouraged to participate in our process for the Housing Element Update. At the December 13 community meeting, our focus is on the fair housing component of the Housing Element Update.

For the first time, the state is requiring cities to include an assessment of fair housing; a site inventory; and programs that take meaningful action to combat discrimination, overcome patterns of segregation, and address racial and economic disparities in housing. Learn more about this assessment at www.sanjoseca.gov/FairHousing

“To overcome patterns of segregation and to address the disparities in the quality of our neighborhoods, we need to listen to and learn from each other,” said Jacky Morales-Ferrand, Housing Department Director. “I’m excited to have community members join the meeting on December 13 where we’ll all learn more about what fair housing means and share our experiences and ideas.”

“Beyond adding more housing units and addressing affordability, I’m excited to see the newly added focus on fair housing as we update our housing strategies,” said Chris Burton, Director of the Planning, Building and Code Enforcement Department. “We look forward to hearing from community members as we undertake this important work.”
